Have you ever been sewing along, everything going smoothly, when you suddenly realize, that your stitches are loose and ugly, or maybe you notice looping on the top or bottom of your fabric!?
“Oh no! What is going on with my tensions!?”
That is what this post is all about!
This is a pretty common issue we see, mostly, on Long-Arm (sit down or stand up models) quite often! It is very possible and sometimes pretty common, on our household flat-bed machines as well.
1. Like when our machines SKIP STITCHES, it is possible our tension discs are dirty; a simple cleaning will do.
2. Our bobbin case area is dirty; if our machine has too much build up of lint or thread under our needle plate, it is possible that there is a too much pressure on our bobbin or bobbin case, keeping our bobbin from unwinding properly while our machine is attempting to create stitches. solution: a good cleaning. This leads us to our next problem.
3. Improperly wound bobbin;
if our bobbin is wound too loosely, and it is too mushy, it is very possible our machine will have tension issues, the only remedy is to wind a bobbin that is firm and tight to the touch.
4. Tensions are unbalanced;
This issue is slightly more tricky. If we have loops on the bottom, we have an issue with our top tension. Our top thread is loose. Our top tension is either not set to the proper setting, our tension discs are dirty, our top tension assembly has lost calibration. The final possibility is that our bobbin thread is too tight, either from too much lint in our bobbin area, or because we need to adjust our bobbin case.
If we have loops on the top of our fabric, our top tension could be too tight; again this could be a simple setting adjustment, or our upper tension has lost calibration. It is also very possible that our bobbin tension is too loose.
5. Inconsistent tensions;
If our tensions seem okay sometimes and sometimes they seem off, it is possible that our machine is slightly out of time, or our needle clearence is off.
The only solution for this is a servicing.
